While I was reading this trilogy I often wondered how its success could be explained. First of all the writing style is elementary, consisting of short trivial sentences, which made me think that if Mrs James had not dedicated herself to commercial porn, she would be a great children's writer.
Also the story in itself is nothing special: it is the usual picture of fairy tale love with its happy ending spiced up by the addition of sadomasochism. In this way the lack of style and content is counter balanced by the high level of eroticism. Although this balance, which is the illusion the narration is based on, works I'll admit for about half a book, it certainly does not last for 3 consecutive books. After a certain limit anyone I think can note how this illusion self-destructs as it is impossible that sex can fool millions of readers for three volumes of 600 pages each when there is no writing ability.
The fact is that the writer had the intelligence (or the luck) to find a subject which is close to many women's hearts ie. their sexual life.This is where the series' success lies. Or, at least this is the only explanation I could find.
Dear Mrs James, thank you for the perfect intimate descriptions, but we need to distinguish a writer from a pornographer and a novel from an unlikely manual of aesthetics, money and sex.

Dandomi alla lettura di questa serie mi sono più e più volte chiesta come possa esserne giustificato il clamoroso successo.
Innanzitutto lo stile è elementare, frasi semplici e molto banali, il che mi ha fatto pensare a quanto la James potrebbe essere una perfetta autrice per bambini, se non si desse al porno commerciale.
Anche la storia in sé non è niente di speciale: la rappresentazione dell'amore da favola con l'assicurato lieto fine più la componente sadomaso. In questo modo la lacuna in stile e contenuti è quindi bilanciata con l'alto tasso di erotismo. E questo equilibrio, questa illusione su cui si basa il romanzo funziona anche, lo ammetto... ma per circa mezzo libro, non per TRE consecutivi! Superato un certo limite penso che che chiunque possa notare/noterà che l'illusione si 'auto-rompe' poiché è improbabile che del sesso possa riuscire a far fessi milioni di lettori per tre volumi da 600 pagine circa l'uno quando non si hanno effettive abilità letterarie.
Il fatto è che l'autrice ha avuto l'acutezza (o la fortuna) di toccare un argomento che, a quanto pare, infiamma molte donne: la vita sessuale. Sta in questo il successo della serie. O, almeno, questa è l'unica giustificazione che sono riuscita a darmi.
Cara James, grazie per le impeccabili descrizioni intime, ma bisogna distinguere un'autrice da una pornografa ed un romanzo da un manuale poco verosimile di estetismo, soldi e sesso.
