The author creates a surreal story telling it in a kind of prose poetry.
The author himself says that his book is not a novel. It is a story. You cannot call it a love story because, if it had been just that, it would not have been worth telling. It describes desires and feelings which you know exist, but cannot put easily into words.
The story is set in the second half of the nineteenth century and takes place around the silk trade. It is about Hervé Joncour and his travels to find the best silkworms, with him eventually ending up in Japan. There the love story starts: Hervé fall in love with a Japanese girl, without even talking to her but just by their way of looking at each other.
That's why when he returns home to his wife, he finds himself thinking of the girl, even though he still has feelings of love for his wife.
The magnitude of this short book is found at the end of the story: when Hervé discovers something about his recently dead wife the character's feelings are not explained beacuse it is up to the reader to imagine them, to feel them. It is like a paint by numbers pictures where it is up to the individual to add colours and details. These are Baricco's books.

L'autore plasma una storia surreale raccontandola in una forma di poesia romanzata.
Come dice l'autore stesso: "Questo non è un romanzo. E neppure un racconto. Questa è una storia. Si potrebbe dire che è una storia d'amore. Ma se fosse soltanto quello, non sarebbe valsa la pena di raccontarla. Ci sono di mezzo dei desideri, e dei dolori, che sai benissimo cosa sono, ma un nome vero, per dirli, non ce l'hai..." .
Ambientata nella seconda metà dell'800 e costruita intorno al commercio di bachi da seta, è la storia di Hervé Joncour e dei suoi viaggi per trovare i bachi migliori, che lo spinsero fino in Giappone. è qui che si innesca la storia d'amore: Hervé si infatua di una ragazza del posto, senza mai parlargli ma che "lo fissava con una violenza che strappava a ogni sua parola l'obbligo di suonare memorabile".
è così che il protagonista, tornato a casa dalla moglie, si trova a pensare alla donna, nonostante abbia sentimenti amorevoli anche per la donna che ha sposato.
"-Non ho mai sentito nemmeno la sua voce.
E dopo un po':
- è uno strano dolore. Morire di nostalgia per qualcosa che non vivrai mai."
è nel finale, quando Hervé fa una scoperta riguardo la moglie da poco morta, che sta racchiusa la grandezza di questo breve libro: i sentimenti del personaggio non sono esplicitati, ma è il lettore a immaginarli, a provarli. Come un'immagine di cui è dato soltanto il disegno, le forme, e sta poi al lettore colorarlo con le tonalità che preferisce. Questo sono i libri di Baricco.
"Quando la solitudine gli stringeva il cuore, saliva al cimitero. Ogni tanto, nelle giornate di vento, scendeva fino al lago e passava ore a guardarlo, giacchè, disegnato sull'acqua, gli pareva di vedere l'inspiegabile spettacolo, lieve, che era stata la sua vita."
