An exciting journey through California from the sixties to nowadays. This romance is the prequel to "Savages" which was recently made into a film by Oliver Stone. In this step back in time of a few decades, the history of drug dealing in California is recounted, starting from the hippies in the Sixties whose motto was "peace and love" and whose drug taking was a means to increase socialization. From the dealing of light drugs like marijuana the business takes off and generates even bigger sums of money.
The arrival on the scene of these large sums of money from the end of the seventies to the start of the eighties leads to an end to the friendships between the drug dealers who no longer know who to trust as everyone is out for themselves.
Relationships are ruined, ideals corrupted, trust is for the weak, the losers and so nowadays has been reached when money and personal profit are the only values ruling the human soul.
The plot is admirable but most of all what interested me was the human process described by Winslow how ideals disappear with the passing of time and above all under the pressure of money.

Il romanzo in questione è il 'prequel' de "LE BELVE", da cui è stato recentemente tratto l'omonimo film diretto da Oliver Stone.
In questo step back di qualche decennio, viene tracciata la storia dello spaccio di droga in California, partito da un movimento hippy durante gli anni Sessanta, il cui motto era "pace e amore", in cui il "farsi" era uno strumento che facilitava e stimolava la socializzazione.
Da uno spaccio della cosiddetta "droga leggera" (marijuana), iniziano a venire coinvolte sempre più significative somme di denaro e si crea il business.
"-Non lo so-. Stan entra nel letto accanto a lei. - Sarebbe bello avere un po' di soldi.
- Potremmo comprare la casa,- dice Diane.
-Ma si tratta di spacciare droga, è questo che volevamo diventare?
-Cosa volevamo diventare, Stan?
Sia detto a suo credito, Stan ride della sua stessa presunzione. -Rivoluzionari.
Volontari d'America.
-Il movimento hippy è finito. Pace e amore, ficcateli nel culo.- dice Diane."
L'entrata in scena del denaro porta, tra la fine degli anni Settanta e l'inizio di quelli Ottanta, ad una perdita dei legami quasi fraterni tra gli spacciatori, che non sanno più di chi fidarsi dal momento che è entrato in vigore l'individualismo.
Prima ancora che la storia, di cui è ammirevole l'intreccio, è interessante il processo umano descritto da Winslow: vedere come gli ideali crollino col passare del tempo e, soprattutto, di fronte ai soldi.
"Eravamo stanchi eravamo invecchiati abbiamo abbandonato i nostri sogni e abbiamo imparato a disprezzarci a schernire il nostro idealismo giovanile ci siamo venduti a poco prezzo non siamo
quelli che volevamo essere."
