UOMINI E NO- E. Vittorini
Attribuire all'uomo soltanto caratteristiche moralisticamente corrette e, quindi, "buone" è erroneo poichè bene e male coesistono in lui.

INGREDIENTI PER UNA VITA DI FORMIDABILI PASSIONI (Originale: "Escritura en tiempos de crisis. Articulos y reflexiones")- L. Sepùlveda
"I was here and nobody told my story" - I bowed down before these words and swore that if anyone wrote these words then I would tell their story, I would give them my voice, so that their silence would cease to be a forgotten tombstone for them.
As the writer himself explains, his whole literary career is based on this principle; he wants to give a voice to the people, things or seemingly unimportant events that would otherwise remain unknown. It is to this objective that the novel is dedicated.
Every chapter is about a different, usually autobiographical subject, in which he goes from speaking about his bibliography to the world of cinema; which he is was able to observe at first hand when he dedicated himself to writing the screen texts for his films; from the local history of his native country to economic and environmental issues.
Sepulveda shows us how highlighting little known or even unknown facts can be a double-edged sword as it gives notoriety to these facts but also makes the public opinion aware of them. In this novel, in fact, he sows the seeds and it is up to the reader to make something of them.
INGREDIENTI PER UNA VITA DI FORMIDABILI PASSIONI- L. Sepùlveda

THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM (or THE SCHOOL OF LICENTIOUSNESS/LIBERTINISM)- De Sade
"Many people only give in to evil when passion overcomes them. After this lapse their placated souls return serenely to their virtuous lives. In this way they live their lives in a state of conflict and errors and with these unresolved conflicts and errors they die without really being able to ascertain what their role on earth was. These people are permanently miserable, always tormented, always indecisive, wasting their lives hating in the morning what they did the night before"
This is not the case with the characters chosen by De Sade as his protagonists for his journey through the depravations of the French nobility during the reign of Louis XIV. These characters, on the contrary, live with their wickedness, so much so, that they take part in the 'game' that is in fact The 120 Days of Sodom (The School of Licentiousness/Libertinism).
The plot, in the style of Boccacio's Decameron, as well as being a novel with a framework has maintained a malignant tone and the fact that the whole novel is built up schematically is an antithesis to the 'madness' that takes place in it. The drama lies in the ingenious insanity that drives the story: the dissoluteness is actually firmly controlled from the start thus underlining the fact that the protagonists are fully aware of their actions, all this gives the reader a clear idea of the other face of Versailles' society, one which we might have guessed existed but never fully believed possible.
"-Man is a mystery" exclaims the Duke
-It's true my friend, replies Curval, like judged a witty man, it's better to fuck him than to try to understand him."
De Sade talks to us about the decline in values, the loss of interest in anything that is not pure physical pleasure, there's no room for affection or love, only lust and power over others. All this is consummated literally.

50 SHADES- E. L. James

While I was reading this trilogy I often wondered how its success could be explained. First of all the writing style is elementary, consisting of short trivial sentences, which made me think that if Mrs James had not dedicated herself to commercial porn, she would be a great children's writer.
Also the story in itself is nothing special: it is the usual picture of fairy tale love with its happy ending spiced up by the addition of sadomasochism. In this way the lack of style and content is counter balanced by the high level of eroticism. Although this balance, which is the illusion the narration is based on, works I'll admit for about half a book, it certainly does not last for 3 consecutive books. After a certain limit anyone I think can note how this illusion self-destructs as it is impossible that sex can fool millions of readers for three volumes of 600 pages each when there is no writing ability.
The fact is that the writer had the intelligence (or the luck) to find a subject which is close to many women's hearts ie. their sexual life. This is where the series' success lies. Or, at least this is the only explanation I could find.
Dear Mrs James, thank you for the perfect intimate descriptions, but we need to distinguish a writer from a pornographer and a novel from an unlikely manual of aesthetics, money and sex.
50 SFUMATURE - E. L. James

TRILOGY OF THE CITY OF K. -A. Kristof
A literary marvel! A cold and cynical noir, written in simple schematic prose which includes a message at the end that hits you like a bullet.
"I'm sure that
every man was born to write a book, and for nothing else. A brilliant book or a
mediocre book, whatever, but the person who does not write anything is a lost
soul, who has only passed by on earth without leaving a trace"
“Let’s begin to
write. We must write what we see, what we hear, what we do. You can’t write: -Grandma looks like a witch.-; but you can write:
-People call Grandma the Witch-.
In the same way, if
we write: - The attendant is kind-, it’s not truthful because the attendant
could be capable of doing something bad without us knowing about it. So all we can
write is: -The attendant gave us some blankets.-
Words which define
feelings are very vague; it is better to avoid them and simply describe
objects, men and ourselves, in other words it is better to stick to describing
facts"
With these concepts
in mind “The NoteBook”, the first
part of the trilogy, is written. Initially the book develops in a linear
fashion and involves the theme of brotherly love, which links two
children during war time. This type of love is emphasized by the fact that the
time and the space of the narration are undefined for the whole of the novel,
and this allows human values to come to the fore. We can see how what is
actually said at the beginning of the book is untrue: feelings matter.
In the Notebook the
brothers tell us what is happening around them during the war when they are
without their parents, and it is just them and Grandma in the countryside.
Grandma's death signals
the beginning of adulthood and the young men have to make an important
decision: separation (The Proof, the second book). While one of
them stays where he is, the other one goes over the border into a foreign
country and "disappears" from the narration, which, from now on, is in
first person while before it was in the plural, as effectively there is only
one protagonist now.
Lucas, who is the
brother who stayed and whose name we only find out now, continues his
life, with the memory of the other brother a constant presence, awaiting his
return. But it is only with the third book (The Third Lie) that literary
magic happens and that only a brilliant mind can imagine: in a short book, the
other two books are overturned, there is a twist in the story.
(NB: In the next
part the twist in the story is talked about, jump this part if you intend to
read the book yourself so as not to spoil the surprise)
"-I'm really
curious to know what is written in these notebooks. Are they a kind of diary?
-No, they're lies.
-Lies?
-Yes, invented
things. Stories that aren't true, but could be."
"It is just a
lie. I know full well that in this city, at Grandma's, I was already alone, and
I just imagined that there were two of us, me and my brother, to put up with
the unbearable loneliness."
It is only at the end
that we find out the main theme to which the whole novel is dedicated : illusion.
Illusion is misleading but necessary for people to make their lives bearable.
Both Leopardi and
Foscolo have dealt with this theme, albeit with two variants: the former, always
the realist and so a universal pessimist, right from the start sees the
negative effect of illusion on man because it prevents rational thought.
Therefore, due to this fact illusion needs to be avoided. The latter, who is nearer
to Kristof's point of view, abandons himself to the nice pictures that his mind
produces and that, even if only for a short time, make life more bearable.
Foscolo and the book's author see illusions as a means of escape from the reality
of everyday life.
"I try
to write true stories, but, at some point, the story becomes unbearable because
of the truths it contains and so I am forced to change it. I try to tell my
story, but I can't, I don't dare, it hurts too much. So, I make everything
better, I describe things that never happened, but how I wished they had
happened. [...] A book, however sad it may be can never be as sad as real life."
TRILOGIA DELLA CITTà DI K. -A. KristofMeraviglia letteraria.
"Ci mettiamo a scrivere.

THE CASUAL VACANCY - J. K. Rowling
Welcome to Pagford, a little countryside town, where respectability and appearance are the only things that matter.
While
their lives are taken up by the problems caused by the "casual vacancy"
in the Town Council caused by the death of Barry Fairbrother, the
characters' psychology is drawn and exposed in all its darkest aspects
and with all its defects.
During a meeting of the Council, the members are not only divided by their internal and political
conflicts, but also by their being on the side of the elite or the common people.
The Fields, a council housing estate which also has a drug rehabilitation centre, is the official
cause of the conflict and the taking of sides in Pagford. One side, led
by Howard Mollison and his wife Shirley, would like to exclude the
Fields from the jurisdiction of Pagford as it damages its image of
superficial perfection whilst the other side, which used to be led by
Barry Fairbrother, is opposed to this.
It is on this two opposing views that the novel is built and developed in detail,
resulting in a
complex book full of many diverse characters each richly described and making for a never-ending
read for the reader and one in which they have to concentrate to
remember all the characters described, many of whom are often not very
likable. This is what I think the author wanted to achieve. As a matter
of fact, it seems to me that her intention was to describe the
thoughts of the people of a town, proud of their apparent
superiority and at the end of the novel making martyrs of the poorer members of society who do not have an easy life and are therefore not part of the elite.
In
this novel, Rowling shows us the other side of the medal, the other
face of perfection and the only one who emerges immune is Fairbrother:
the unrivalled protagonist, his presence is felt throughout the novel
but being dead he is only described in a positive way. As Leopardi said
in his moral work "Dialogo della natura e di un'anima" (Dialogue between
nature and the soul): "People persecute you with their
envy, but once
you are dead they celebrate you to the skies."
The
Harry Potter novels were renowned and special for the way readers were
able to develope a close link with the main characters over the course
of the seven novels and it is therefore all the more surprising that the
author in her first post Potter novel, which is impeccable from a
descriptive point of view almost to the point of being maniacal, has
created characters the readers find difficult to even like or empathise with, resulting in the reader feeling no great affinity with the narration.

This novel is the Diary of Misty from when her husband falls into a coma. Misty is a woman who, in order to fulfill her dream of a well off life, finds herself living on an island where rich and bigoted people live. They live off the visiting tourists who are richer than the islanders.
It is the classic story of a frustrated woman, in a midlife crisis, who realizes that her dreams have not been fulfilled, her projects have not succeeded, she is at a point of no return and she blames her husband for bringing her to this point.
Surely there's also the Palahniuk's mark : Misty has not ended up on the island because of love as she believes but due to an intrigue brought about by the islanders. They wanted her to join their community to help them win against the tourists and regain control of the island, a "battle" that takes place every hundred years.
At this point Palahniuk refers to Plato's doctrine on reminiscence, which for our soul is immortal. In this way we have an innate knowledge from our past lives and we unconsciously "remember" things from there. Misty's soul is the same as that of the other women who have previously accomplished the "mission" so, in a kind of way, she can "remember" how to do things.
This novel shows an unusual Palahniuk as the book is set in a seaside resort not in his usual city or countryside and it is about people who have different habits.
The author is always sharp in his depiction of the darker aspects of society, the hidden aspects, but in this case he puts people who are very different to us under his magnifying glass. People who have not kept up to date with the passing of time but who are obsessed with their antiquated traditions and stuck in the past. Maybe it is because of this that the novel does not hit the readers like his other novels (Invisible Monsters, Fight Club, Rant etc.) Perhaps it is because of this, that when faced with his typical "improbable exaggeration", which is usually what we remember and love most about Palahniuk, this time we do not find it so ingenious, but on the contrary, too much.

This novel tells the story of Gianni, which is everyone's life. Every person feels or at least thinks about how ephemeral happiness is, about how a single thing going wrong can cause everything else to go wrong creating a chain which can ruin our initial happiness. As this is such a commonplace discussion we never tire of talking about this or listening to others talk about it.
In this case, Veronesi faces it through Gianni, an ordinary man with a wife and child who lives peacefully. What starts the chain of events is the death of his father who he has never had a good relationship with; other events then happen to him, for instance he finds out his wife has cheated on him but she regrets her actions, it all ends with a car accident.
Despite all the bad things that happen to him Gianni decides to carry on living as if nothing has happened as he says "let's make a little miracle" to live better.
The moral of the story that the author wishes to underline is that we should not concentrate on our misfortunes as bad things always happen, we should just let the bad things follow their course and not bother trying to do something about them and above all we should stop thinking about the happiness we have lost. Instead we should concentrate on our good times in the presen,t if we have them, and not worry about how these good times may not exist in the future. A happy past should be our strength not our cross.

SETA - A. Baricco
The author creates a surreal story telling it in a kind of prose poetry.
The author himself says that his book is not a novel. It is a story. You cannot call it a love story because, if it had been just that, it would not have been worth telling. It describes desires and feelings which you know exist, but cannot put easily into words.
The story is set in the second half of the nineteenth century and takes place around the silk trade. It is about Hervé Joncour and his travels to find the best silkworms, with him eventually ending up in Japan. There the love story starts: Hervé fall in love with a Japanese girl, without even talking to her but just by their way of looking at each other.
That's why when he returns home to his wife, he finds himself thinking of the girl, even though he still has feelings of love for his wife.
The magnitude of this short book is found at the end of the story: when Hervé discovers something about his recently dead wife the character's feelings are not explained beacuse it is up to the reader to imagine them, to feel them. It is like a paint by numbers pictures where it is up to the individual to add colours and details. These are Baricco's books.

SETA - A. Baricco

THE LIBRARIANS (I CUSTODI DELLA BIBLIOTECA)- G. Cooper
This is the third chapter in the "Library of the Dead" saga but it didn't excite me as much as the first two did.In the previous books (above all in the first) it was quite impossible to stop reading because of the use of flashbacks and flashforwards. There were good links to history, from the monks in England before the year 1000, to Winston Churchill in the "Library of the Dead", to Shakespeare and Nostradamus in the "Book of Souls". The constant twists made the rhythm tight without loss of tension.
In the novel in question although the author's style continues to keep the reading fast the plot has less twists: this time the story is set in the future where Will Piper and his family find themselves facing a possible "end of the world" situation.
As always the plot is dynamic, Cooper does not allow his narration to bore the reader making this a pleasant read but certainly leaving it in the shadow of its two predecessors.
I CUSTODI DELLA BIBLIOTECA- G. Cooper

Short and brief. It is set in a few pages, not a difficult but not even a light read.
The way it is written is what shocks the most: as if it is a common thing to be a killer who has to choose between his job and his feelings. Furthermore, the final decision is taken quickly and easily. What leaves you more dazed maybe is that it is written in the first person, so it is the killer himself who speaks and reports his adventures in such a detached way.
Because of this way of writing, the book reminds you of "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" of GG Marquez, but in this case the plot is much easier than that of Marquez.
All this leads to a book that is read easily but left me quite dazed.

Breve e conciso.

THE KINGS OF COOL (I RE DEL MONDO)- Don Winslow
An exciting journey through California from the sixties to nowadays. This romance is the prequel to "Savages" which was recently made into a film by Oliver Stone. In this step back in time of a few decades, the history of drug dealing in California is recounted, starting from the hippies in the Sixties whose motto was "peace and love" and whose drug taking was a means to increase socialization. From the dealing of light drugs like marijuana the business takes off and generates even bigger sums of money.
The arrival on the scene of these large sums of money from the end of the seventies to the start of the eighties leads to an end to the friendships between the drug dealers who no longer know who to trust as everyone is out for themselves.
Relationships are ruined, ideals corrupted, trust is for the weak, the losers and so nowadays has been reached when money and personal profit are the only values ruling the human soul.
The plot is admirable but most of all what interested me was the human process described by Winslow how ideals disappear with the passing of time and above all under the pressure of money.
“ What happened? Stan repeats. To us?To the country? What happened?Altamont, Charlie Manson, Sharon Tate, Son of Sam, Mark Chapman we saw a dream turn into a nightmare we saw love and peace turn into endless war and violence our idealism into realism our realism into cynicism our cynicism into apathy our apathy into selfishness our selfishness into greed and then greed was good. What happened? You start by trying to create a new world and then you find yourself just wanting to add a bottle to your cellar, a few extra feet to the sunroom, you see yourself aging and wonder if you've put enough away for that and suddenly you realize that you're frightened of the years ahead of you whatHappened?Watergate Irangate Contragate scandals and corruption all around you and you never think you'll become corrupt but time corrupts you.
[...]
We got tired, we got old we gave up our dreams we taught ourselves to scorn ourselves to despise our youthful idealism we sold ourselves cheap we aren'tWho we wanted to be."
I RE DEL MONDO - Don Winslow
-Cosa volevamo diventare, Stan?

TU, MIO - E. De Luca
This book is set during the fifties' postwar period and it lasts the lenght of a summer, which is an important period for the main character, who goes from being a boy to be a man.
As he says, it was his sixteens' summer and he used to stay apart from his peers without looking for girls as old as him. He used to like the older ones, and that summer he was able to hang out with them. This because of Daniele, four years older than him, saw in him how a deep person he was and started taking him out together with his friends.
The boy wants to know more about the war, even though those memories are avoided by the people who lived that period. Caia, a Jewess girl, gives him the chance to do it by searching for her "secret": during this search, he faces a feeling more powerful than the love between teenagers, the love of a father and his daughter.
The boy goes, from wanting to know facts about the war just for curiosity, to a personal knoledge of the subject: he finds himself being Caia's father lost during the Nazism, and there it happens the passage from the boy to the man.
As he says: "I felt love, Caia, huge love, a snatch in the years, i felt the ages that I'm going to live until the love for a child and a daughter. You, your father, gave a way in the world to me, a dazed boy, silent for the bad things around him."
This is an educational novel (it talks about the growth of a teenager) but the common story about the boy who feels different from the others, misunderstood, and who one day, for some kind of reason grows up and becomes a man, is located in a really happened situation: the postwar. In fact, the author sets the story which can fit every teenager in the world in a given time. In this way he gives to the educational story an addition of themes which are sensitive for real. From generic to definite.

From generic to definite.
