DIARY- C. Palahniuk

This novel is the Diary of Misty from when her husband falls into a coma. Misty is a woman who, in order to fulfill her dream of a well off life, finds herself living on an island where rich and bigoted people live. They live off the visiting tourists who are richer than the islanders.

It is the classic story of a frustrated woman, in a midlife crisis, who realizes that her dreams have not been fulfilled, her projects have not succeeded, she is at a point of no return and she blames her husband for bringing her to this point.
Surely there's also the Palahniuk's mark : Misty has not ended up on the island because of love as she believes but due to an intrigue brought about by the islanders. They wanted her to join their community to help them win against the tourists and regain control of the island, a "battle" that takes place every hundred years.

At this point Palahniuk refers to Plato's doctrine on reminiscence, which for our soul is immortal. In this way  we have an innate knowledge from our past lives and we unconsciously "remember" things from there. Misty's soul is the same as that of the other women who have previously accomplished the "mission" so, in a kind of way, she can "remember" how to do things.

This novel shows an unusual Palahniuk as the book is set in a seaside resort not in his usual city or countryside and it is about people who have different habits.

The author is always sharp in his depiction of the darker aspects of society, the hidden aspects, but in this case he puts people who are very different to us under his magnifying glass. People who have not kept up to date with the passing of time but who are obsessed with their antiquated traditions and stuck in the past. Maybe it is because of this that the novel does not hit the readers like his other novels (Invisible Monsters, Fight Club, Rant etc.) Perhaps it is because of this, that when faced with his typical "improbable exaggeration", which is usually what we remember and love most about Palahniuk, this time we do not find it so ingenious, but on the contrary, too much.

RANT, C. Palahniuk- add

In my previous post I tried to give as much as I could about the author's writing style, which is not easy at all both in the plot and in the contents.
Those who have already read this book should know that the narration isn't as straightforward as I tried to make it and that you can completely understand the book once you've fished it, and, maybe, after some time spent reflecting about the themes in the story.
Personally, I think Palahniuk is a great author, who can touch many themes using sentences that manage to surprise the reader by the way they reflect so accurately his habits.
Everytime I read something from Palahniuk I always find myself with the same question: is his cynism just pure apathy or does he want to move our consciousness?

RABBIA, C. Palahniuk- appendice

RANT, C. Palahniuk

“What if reality is nothing but some disease?”
Imagine a world where the population is divided between day and night people based on the social importance; where everyone has a "door" down the nape, which with they "canalize life's daily peaks", forgetting to actually live; where, among the night people, party crashing, a real dodgem, practiced with real cars, in real roads, has become the only way to be in contact with real life, which is obviously illegal.
Imagine now a man, Rant Casey, who, raised in the coutryside contracts the rabies virus through being bitten by various sort of animals, goes to ruin this world transmitting the virus, which becomes a widespread nationwide epidemic.
Imagine that the rabies virus, more than a lethal epidemic, is the antidote to the "canalized peaks", and so on it is more scary for the allpowerfuls, who, through the "peaks" were able to exercise more power and control.
Imagine that the rabies virus is the escape from a sick reality.
Imagine that this comes while Rant is searching for a man, Green Taylor Simms, who, some time before had told him he was his real father.
Imagine that Rant takes part of the nocturnes gruop who practise the party crashing, and that, one day, when the epidemic has come into its own, he disappears during a car accident.
Imagine that a man wants to achieve immortality.
Imagine that a man can actually reach immortality.
Imagine that Rant comes back in time through the accident.
Imagine that the road to immortality is into the coming back in time, and that humanity does not do that, and has never thought to do it, because they were just being controlled through the "canalized peaks", and so on by the allpowerfuls.
Imagine that Rant, transmitting the rabies virus, saved humanity.
"You don't have to believe it unwillingly, you can choose to just die."

RABBIA, C. Palahniuk
