"I was here and nobody told my story" - I bowed down before these words and swore that if anyone wrote these words then I would tell their story, I would give them my voice, so that their silence would cease to be a forgotten tombstone for them.
As the writer himself explains, his whole literary career is based on this principle; he wants to give a voice to the people, things or seemingly unimportant events that would otherwise remain unknown. It is to this objective that the novel is dedicated.
Every chapter is about a different, usually autobiographical subject, in which he goes from speaking about his bibliography to the world of cinema; which he is was able to observe at first hand when he dedicated himself to writing the screen texts for his films; from the local history of his native country to economic and environmental issues.
Sepulveda shows us how highlighting little known or even unknown facts can be a double-edged sword as it gives notoriety to these facts but also makes the public opinion aware of them. In this novel, in fact, he sows the seeds and it is up to the reader to make something of them.

Mi sono inginocchiato davanti a quelle parole e ho giurato che, chiunque le avesse scritte, io avrei raccontato la sua storia, gli avrei dato la mia voce perchè il suo silenzio smettesse di essere una lapide carica del più infame degli oblii. Per questo scrivo."
Come spiega l'autore stesso, la sua intera carriera letteraria si fonda su questa prerogativa: dare una voce a persone, a cose o ad eventi "piccoli", che altrimenti resterebbero nell'anonimato. Ed è a questo obiettivo, quindi, che questo romanzo è consacrato.
Ogni capitolo è dedicato ad un argomento diverso, in genere autobiografico, nei quali spazia dal parlare della sua bibliografia all'ambiente del cinema che ha potuto vedere da vicino nei tempi in cui si è dedicato alla stesura delle sue opere cinematografiche. Dalla storia locale del suo Paese natio a problemi di attualità economica ed ambientale.
Sepùlveda ci fa capire come mettere in luce fatti poco noti o addirittura sconosciuti è un'arma a doppio taglio poichè permette non solo di acquistare notorietà all'oggetto in questione, ma anche di rendere cosciente l'opinione pubblica. In quest'opera infatti getta qua e là piccoli "ingredienti" nel lettore, al quale poi resta di appassionarsi e farne qualcosa.
